Via Andrew Sullivan, there's a list of qualities shared by good blogs at 43 Folders, written by Merlin Mann. “Good blogs reflect focused obsessions,” he says, and he's absolutely right. I can get balanced, responsible perspectives in the Atlantic Monthly. My favorite bloggers come at things from wildly unexpected angles, usually get stuck on the same basic points, and occasionally write something transcendently fascinating. I think there's some pretty good variety in my sidebar.
The downside of reading the list is that I realize that my blog is nothing but unfocused obsession. Tighten it up a bit, eh, William?
